McKenzie Method (MDT)

A movement-based approach that finds the exact position that eases your pain — then teaches you how to keep it that way.

Not every back or neck problem responds to the same treatment, and guessing wastes time. The McKenzie Method, also called Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), is a system for figuring out — quickly, and without guesswork — which movements and positions actually reduce your pain, so we can build your treatment around what works for you. Dr. Ressler and McCune are both certified in MDT, and it's a core part of how we approach rehab chiropractic care at RSR.

What Is MDT?

MDT was developed by physical therapist Robin McKenzie and is used worldwide to assess and treat spine and joint pain. Instead of starting with a generic treatment plan, your provider has you move through a series of repeated motions and sustained positions during your evaluation. The goal is to find your "directional preference" — the specific movement pattern that reduces or centralizes your symptoms (for example, pain that moves from your leg back toward your spine, which is usually a good sign).

Once that pattern is identified, it becomes the foundation of your care: a mix of hands-on treatment here in the office and a specific home exercise program built around the direction that actually helps your body heal.

Conditions MDT Is Commonly Used For:

  • Low back pain, including pain that radiates into the hip or leg

  • Sciatica-type symptoms

  • Disc-related pain

  • Neck pain, including pain that radiates into the shoulder or arm

  • Pain that's been hard to pin down with other approaches

What to Expect

Your visit starts the same way every visit here does — a real evaluation, not a cookie-cutter routine. Our doctors will walk you through specific repeated movements and positions to see how your symptoms respond in real time. From there, treatment typically combines:

  • Chiropractic adjustment to restore joint motion

  • Directional exercises based on what your assessment showed

  • Soft tissue work where it's needed

  • A home program so the progress you make here keeps going between visits

Because we re-evaluate at every visit — not just the first one — your plan adjusts as you improve, instead of running you through a fixed number of sessions regardless of how you're doing.
